Advanced SEO Ranking Factors

There are many factors that are used to determine SERP's.  Some of the factors are heavily debated amongst SEO's and there is no universal answer to any of these debates.  The fact is the Google ranking algorithm is extrremely complex as well as proprietary, so at the end of the day, all SEO is conjecture based on information and best practices supplied by search engines, personal experience and anecdotal reporting of others experiences.

Our goal here is to provide a basic roadmap that normal people (no PHD in Statisitics or Computer Science) can digest and formulate an actionale plan for their marketing activities.  It is very easy for marketers to get excessively "bogged down" in the miniscule details of the SEO process and lose focus on the overall goals and general strateigies that can help them to be successful.

Practice Makes Perfect!

Like anything else in life, you will probably get more proficient at SEO as you get going and see what is working and what is not.  SEO can be intimidating and require grasping many concepts at the same time in order to follow a process that can provide results. We also believe that the SEO process can fail at  many points along the process and sometimes it is necessary to study minute details on an extremely granular level.  Also, anyone can miss an important step in the SEO process or bungle some part and get frustrated.  Sometime, you may not even have a clue where you made a mistake or where you could improve upon.

If We Work Together, We Can All Improve

This is why we are trying to create SEO Superpack and provide some basic information, but more importantly a place where people can discuss their issues and questions in a professional environment.  We hope that you will join us in this conversation by posting comments and joining the conversation!

  • The Quality and Authority Of Links
  • The Topical Relevance of Links

Other Factors Also Influence SEO

There are other factors besides LINKS that can affect SERP rankings.   We have spent the majority of our time thusfar discussing the importance of Links, and they are super, super important, but there are other areas we must also discuss and make part of our SEO Process.  Let's discuss the general categories we want to be familiar with before we go into greater detail.

Let's divide this discussion into a few categories:

Categories SEO Ranking Factors

  • On-Page Ranking Factors
  • Off-Page Ranking Factors
  • Site Wide Related Ranking Factors
  • Social Media Related Factors
  • Geo-Targeting Ranking Factos
  • Negative Ranking Factors

On-Page Ranking Factors:

On-Page Ranking Factors are characteristcs about a unique page within your website that want to to get ranked high on the SERP's.  The factors we cover are items that you can control or influence about these pages. We have 2 areas to discuss with On-Site Page Ranking Factors.

Keyword Related Factors: are methods to make your page a more likely to get indexed/ranked by clearly identifying the page for a specific Keyword or Keyword Phrase.

TIP 1: Use Keyword In Title Tag (as the first word if approriate) on page

TIP 2: Use Keyword In H1 Tag (as the first word if approriate) on page

TIP 3: Use Keyword In Internal or External Link Anchortext on page

Non-Keyword Related Factors:

TIP 4: Original Content that is >500 words

TIP 5: Fresh Content, the newer the better!

Off-Page Ranking Factors:

Off-Page Ranking Factors is one of the most important and LINKS to your site are included in the category.  You should find these tips familiar as we have covered them in other sections and will continue to cover these "must have" factors.  Many SEO's say that external links is probaly 70%-80% od the SEO puzzle.

TIP 6: Keyword Used In The External (Off-Page) Link's Achor Text (Relevancy)

TIP 7: Quality or Authority of Page/Site of External Link (Check PR Value of Link)

TIP 8: Quantity and Diversity of External Links: the number of external links as well as the number of different websites that provide the links. (i.e. 500 links from the same domain versus 500 links from 500 different domains)

TIP 9: Don't Worry So Much About No Follow External Links: Focus effort on quality content and quality link building

Site Wide Ranking Factors:

TIP 10: Internal Architecture of Site: Organize your site pages logically and submit an XML sitemap using Google Webmaster Tools.

TIP 11: Velocity of Gain or Loss of External Links: This is a hotly debated issue.  Links coming very fast or losing links fast could signal question marks...this is why we recommend steady, moderate, quality link building and content distribution.
